PfS Sheffield News
and Information
Brief
overview of PfS Sheffield
Playing for Success
(Sheffield) consists of the 3 established study support
centres we have at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club,
Sheffield United Football Club and Westfield Sharks
Basketball Club. It also includes a fourth centre which
is due to open soon at the English Institute for Sport
Sheffield which features a range of different sports
including athletics, badminton, judo and a snooker
academy.
The programme
exists to support the children and young people of Sheffield in
their learning. By working in an exciting location with
professional sporting personnel and be supported by high quality
I.T. we create a exciting and motivating opportunity for
youngsters to engage with learning.
The staff of
each centre are involved in joint working and professional
development across the centres so that staff can bring their
different expertise to each centre. At the same time staff can
share the excellent practice in each centre across the others.
By combining the
centres into Playing for Success (Sheffield) we can also combine
budgets and target them more accurately to meet the needs of the
centres and so the children and young people we work with.
Coordinator message
“What
we offer headteachers and schools is a programme that can be
tweaked to support the school’s developmental aims. Although the
children’s attendance at the programme is voluntary we see high
levels of engagement and enjoyment. Staff deliver an excellently
constructed programme of fun learning activities.
By working in
close partnership with the schools we consolidate the many
positives that come out of attending this Study Support
initiative.”

News
Apart
from the Playing for Success programme, which runs between 3.30
and 7.30, the team are also running a range of very successful
daytime and holiday programmes. The children’s university and
primary gifted and talented programmes utilise the centres and
again we are seeing a tremendous reaction from the children
involved.
